Late night things to do in Calgary, sorted by the hour

The city's list is long at 9 PM and very short at 1 AM. These are late night things to do in Calgary grouped by how late it actually is, so you can stop guessing what is still open and just pick.

Calgary does not close all at once. It closes in stages, and each stage takes a different set of options with it. Most late-night plans fall apart because somebody picked an idea from the wrong stage.

So here is the evening split by the clock: what is still running before midnight, what survives to 2 AM, and what is genuinely open after that.

10 PM to midnight: most of the city is still awake

This is the easy window, and it is the one most people mean when they search for things to do in Calgary at night. Almost everything indoors is still going, and it is quieter than it was two hours earlier.

  • The last screening. The final showing of the night is usually the emptiest room in the building.
  • Bowling and arcades. These tend to run latest on weekends. Check the night you are actually going, because weeknights are a different schedule.
  • A gym session. Twenty-four hour gyms are at their best around now. Nobody is waiting for the rack.
  • A drive up a hill. Nose Hill, Crescent Heights and Scotsman's Hill all give you the city at night for nothing. Dress for the wind.
  • An indoor golf bay. No closing time to work around, and the rate drops at 11 PM on Sunday through Thursday.

Nothing in that list needs more than a day of planning. If you want the all-weather version of the same question, the indoor activities guide sorts a longer list by group size.

Midnight to 2 AM: the list gets short fast

This is where plans die. The cinemas have emptied, the lanes are shutting down, and anywhere with someone on the door is counting the minutes. If you have not already picked your stop, you are now choosing between driving around and going home.

What survives is the self-serve category: places that run without anyone on shift. Twenty-four hour gyms, 24-hour golf bays, and the outdoors if you are dressed for it. A walk on the river paths at half past midnight is better than it sounds, mostly because there is nobody else on them.

The other trick for this hour is to make it a second stop rather than a first. Whatever you booked for 10 PM ends around now, and an hour somewhere quiet is an easy way to keep the night going without starting from nothing. For group plans earlier in the evening, see things to do in Calgary with friends.

After 2 AM: open late in Calgary means open all night

Past 2 AM the word late stops being useful. A place is either open around the clock or it is shut, and searching for open late Calgary at that point really means searching for 24 hours.

That list is genuinely short here. Gyms, a handful of self-serve venues, the airport, and the services nobody wants to need. Indoor golf belongs on that list.

Night golf in Calgary, without waiting for anybody

PGM Indoor Golf has six private bays just south of Glenmore Trail in SE Calgary, each with its own simulator and touchscreen, open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, every day of the year. Nobody works on site, and that is exactly why a 3 AM booking is possible at all.

The booking email chain is the whole check-in: a confirmation, then a door link you open when you arrive. The simulator starts on its own at your booking time, so the room runs itself. The how it works page covers the sequence, and the 24/7 bay guide goes further into who books overnight and the etiquette of a building with nobody in it.

A remote team answers the phone on 403-680-3380 if something is not right when you get there.

The late hours are the cheap hours

Rates are per bay, per hour, plus GST, and everyone in the bay shares one price. The $18 band covers from 11 PM Sunday to Thursday, before 9 AM Sunday to Thursday, and before 10 AM Friday and Saturday. Everything else is $30 or $35 depending on the day, with Friday evening and Saturday at the top. The rates page has it laid out.

If late is your normal rather than your occasional, Night Owl is $129 a month plus GST for unlimited bookings between 11 PM and 10 AM Sunday to Thursday, and between midnight and 10 AM on Friday and Saturday nights. The membership page has the other two plans.

Sort this before you leave the house

Bookings come in 30-minute blocks with a 30-minute minimum, and you can extend on the day if nobody has booked the bay after you. Cancellations need at least 24 hours notice by email, and same-day bookings cannot be cancelled, so book the hour once you are sure of it. Bring your own clubs, because PGM does not provide them and there is nobody to ask at 2 AM.

Late night things to do in Calgary that need no booking

  • City lookouts. Ten minutes of skyline from a hill resets a bad evening.
  • The river pathways, which are empty and well lit through most of the inner city.
  • Northern lights on a clear, cold night. Get to the north edge of the city and away from streetlights, and take the disappointment in stride.
  • A drive out of the glow. Twenty minutes east and the sky changes completely.

How to plan a late night

  1. Decide when the night ends before you decide what is in it. Work backwards from there.
  2. For anywhere staffed, confirm the closing time for that night, not the one you remember from summer.
  3. Put one 24-hour option in the plan as a backstop, so a closed door does not end the evening.
  4. Book whatever can be booked, so the last stop is settled before you set off.
  5. Check what you have to bring. For a golf bay that means clubs, and the access link open on your phone before you get out of the car.

Pick an hour that suits you

If the late slot is the one that works, pick a time on the Calgary booking page, including the ones that look unreasonable, and bring your clubs. Access, timing and house rules are on the FAQ.
