24/7 golf simulators, and who books them at 4 AM

A bay that opens at any hour sounds like a gimmick until you look at who uses it. Here is who actually books overnight, exactly how self-serve access works when nobody is on site, what the cheap hours cost, and the etiquette that keeps an unstaffed room working.

Who actually plays at odd hours

The people searching for 24 7 golf simulators are rarely night owls by choice. They are people whose free time lands somewhere the rest of the city has closed.

  • Shift workers. Nurses, oil and gas crews, trades and anyone on nights. A 6 AM tee time after a shift is the same as a 6 PM one for everybody else.
  • New parents. The hour between the kid going down and your own bedtime is real, and it is usually after 10 PM.
  • People who finish at 11. Restaurant and bar staff, warehouse crews, anyone in retail through December.
  • Golfers avoiding the crowd. Saturday afternoon is the busiest slot on any booking calendar, and here it is the dearest one too. Sunday at 7 AM is neither.
  • Jet lag and insomnia. If you are awake at 3 AM anyway, an hour of wedges beats another hour of scrolling.

What they share is a need for something that does not depend on a person being there to unlock a door.

How 24/7 golf simulators work without staff

PGM Indoor Golf has six private bays just south of Glenmore Trail in SE Calgary, open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, every day of the year. Nobody works on site. The sequence is the same at 2 PM and at 2 AM.

  1. Book your bay and time online. Bookings come in 30-minute blocks, with a 30-minute minimum.
  2. A confirmation email arrives with your booking details.
  3. A second email arrives with a door access link.
  4. Open that link at the door to get in.
  5. The simulator turns on by itself at your start time and shuts down at the end.

That last point is worth planning around. The clock starts when your booking starts, not when you finish tying your shoes, so arrive a few minutes early and warm up on your own time. If nobody has booked the bay after you, you can extend on the day. The how it works page covers the whole sequence in more detail.

A remote team answers the phone on 403-680-3380 if something is not right.

The cheapest hours are the awkward ones

The economics of 24/7 golf simulators favour the awkward hours. Rates are per bay, per hour, plus GST, shared by everyone in the bay, and the lowest rate is $18 an hour, and it covers exactly the hours most venues are shut.

  • Before 9 AM, Sunday to Thursday.
  • Before 10 AM, Friday and Saturday.
  • From 11 PM, Sunday to Thursday.

Everything else is $30 or $35 an hour depending on the day, with Friday evening and Saturday at the top. So the same bay, the same simulator and the same 200-plus courses cost at least 40% less if you can move your session to 7 AM or 11 PM. The rates page has the full schedule.

Night Owl, and the point where it pays for itself

If late or early is your normal rather than your occasional, there is a membership built for it. Night Owl is $129 a month plus GST and covers unlimited bookings between 11 PM and 10 AM Sunday to Thursday, and between midnight and 10 AM on Friday and Saturday nights.

The break-even is about seven hours

At $18 an hour, $129 buys roughly seven hours of overnight bay time. So Night Owl starts paying for itself at under two hours a week, and everything past that costs nothing extra. If you golf once a fortnight it is not worth it. If you practise before work twice a week, it is. The membership page also covers the Standard and Ultimate options, which include booking credit and a discount at any hour. Ultimate includes Night Owl as well, so it comes with the same unlimited night hours.

Etiquette in a room with nobody in it

Self-serve works because everyone treats it like a shared space. None of this is complicated, and all of it matters more at 3 AM than at 3 PM.

  • Leave the bay clean. Balls back where you found them, rubbish out with you. The next person arrives to an empty building.
  • No Sharpie on golf balls. The ink transfers onto the screens and does not come off.
  • Finish on time. The simulator shuts down on its own, and somebody may be booked in behind you.
  • Keep the volume reasonable. Other bays can be occupied at any hour.
  • Bring your own clubs. PGM does not provide any, and there is nobody to ask.
  • Minors must be with an adult, and there is no alcohol on the premises.
  • Have the access link open on your phone before you get out of the car, rather than searching your inbox in the cold.

Two things to know before you book late

First, cancellations need at least 24 hours notice by email to fspgmindoorgolf@gmail.com, and same-day bookings cannot be cancelled. A 4 AM slot booked at midnight is a commitment.

Second, budget 1 to 1.5 hours per player including warm-up. A single golfer at 6 AM gets a lot done in an hour. Three friends at 11 PM will want two or three.

Book the hour that suits you

The point of a 24 hour golf simulator is that no hour is off limits. Pick any time on the Calgary booking page, including the ones that look unreasonable, and bring your clubs. Anything still unclear goes to the FAQ.
