Things to do in Calgary with friends on any budget

Most group chats stall at the same point: everyone is keen and nobody picks. These things to do in Calgary with friends are sorted by budget, time of day and group size, so someone can make the call.

5 minute read

Two friends, a man and a woman, sit on chairs in a dark simulator bay reacting to a shot, with their clubs beside them
Two friends watching a shot in a private bay, where one hourly rate covers everyone in the room.

The hard part of a plan with friends is rarely the idea. It is matching the idea to the people: how many are coming, what they want to spend, and whether they want to compete or catch up.

Answer those three questions and the list shrinks to two or three options. The sections below do that sorting for you.

Quick picks by group size

  • Two to four, want to talk: a walk along the Bow River pathways, a coffee crawl through Kensington or Inglewood, or a gallery afternoon downtown.
  • Two to four, want to compete: a climbing gym, bowling, pickleball, or a private golf simulator bay.
  • Six to ten: anything that splits into teams. Two bowling lanes, two escape rooms, or two golf bays booked for the same start time.
  • Half the group does not care what you do: pick something where people can sit out a turn and still be part of the night.

Cheap things to do in Calgary with friends

The cheapest plans here are outside. Nose Hill Park, Fish Creek Provincial Park and Prince's Island Park are all public, and a pathway loop with one stop for coffee fills an afternoon. In winter the same budget gets you a toboggan hill or an outdoor rink, with skates you already own.

Indoors, look for anything priced per group rather than per person. When one rate is split between four or five people, the cost per head drops with every friend who says yes. A board game night at someone's place still beats most paid options on value, and nobody has to drive home across the city.

Afternoon, evening or late

  • Afternoon: the Calgary Zoo, Telus Spark, Studio Bell, or a long walk in one of the big parks. Daylight plans suit groups who mostly want to talk. Check opening days first, since several sites change their schedule by season.
  • Evening: dinner on 17th Avenue or Stephen Avenue, a movie, bowling, a hockey game or live music. Book ahead for Fridays and Saturdays rather than hoping to walk in.
  • Late: the list gets short after midnight. Diners, 24-hour gyms and self-serve venues are most of it. The

guide goes through it hour by hour.

Competitive or talk-friendly

Decide which kind of night you want before you pick the place. Competitive plans, such as bowling, climbing, trivia or golf, give quieter friends something to do and something to talk about. Talk-friendly plans, such as dinner, a walk or a gallery, suit a group that has not caught up in months.

A golf bay sits in between. One person swings while everyone else sits, watches and chats, and turns are short enough that nobody is left out for long. If the occasion is bigger than a regular Friday, the bachelor party ideas for Calgary post covers plans built around one person.

Where a private golf bay fits

PGM Indoor Golf has six private bays at 6712 Fisher St SE, just south of Glenmore Trail, open 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Each bay has its own simulator and touchscreen, and only your group is in the room. More than 200 virtual courses, a virtual driving range and Swing Cam are all included.

The rate is per bay, per hour, shared by everyone in it. That is what makes it work for friends: one booking, one price, split however you like. The rates page has the full schedule by day and time, plus a planner for working out how long to book.

Late night, split four ways

From 11 PM Sunday to Thursday a bay is $18 an hour plus GST. Four friends who book two hours pay $36 for the bay, or $9 each before GST. If everyone wants a full session, allow 1 to 1.5 hours per player. For a shorter night, play fewer holes or stay on the range, and see how long a round of golf takes before you choose.

Two things to know before you send the invite. Everyone brings their own clubs, because PGM does not provide clubs of any kind, so friends without a set need to borrow one or share yours. And there is no alcohol on the premises, so if drinks are part of the night, plan that part for somewhere else. The how it works page covers booking, the door access link and how the simulator switches on at your start time.

How to get the group to commit

  1. Pick the date and start time first, then the activity.
  2. Put a per-person budget in the chat before anyone suggests anything.
  3. Offer two options, not five. Long lists are how plans die.
  4. Say what people need to bring. For golf, that means clubs.
  5. Book it, then split it. Shared-rate bookings get cheaper per person as more people say yes.

Make the call

If a golf bay is the pick, choose a time on the Calgary booking page and tell everyone to bring clubs. The FAQ answers the short questions, or call 403-680-3380 and a real person will answer.
