Organising a bachelor party is mostly a scheduling job. You are juggling a dozen calendars, a range of budgets and a guest of honour who may not want to be the centre of attention at all.
Most Calgary bachelor party ideas work if the basics are right. This guide covers those basics first, then the activities, then how everyone gets home.
Start with the group size and the budget
The guest list decides almost everything else. Four or five people can do nearly anything at short notice. Eight to twelve need bookings. Over a dozen, you are planning an event and should treat it like one.
Settle the budget per head before you book anything, and put the number in your first message to the group. People in a wedding party do not all earn the same, and a plan that is easy for one guest can be a stretch for another. A clear number up front saves awkward conversations later. Decide too whether the group is covering the guest of honour's share, because that changes the figure for everyone else.
Day, night, or a bit of both
There are three basic shapes, and picking one early makes every other decision easier.
- Daytime. An activity, a long lunch, and everyone home at a reasonable hour. Good for groups with young kids, long drives or early shifts the next day.
- Night. Dinner and an evening out. The classic format, and the one where transport matters most.
- Both. An activity in the afternoon, dinner, then an evening out for whoever is still going. This lets people join for the part that suits them.
Mixing activities helps a group where not everyone knows each other. Something with a scoreboard early in the day gives people something to talk about at dinner. For more ideas that work for groups of friends, see our guide to things to do in Calgary with friends.
Bachelor party ideas in Calgary, by type
- A day in the mountains. Hiking, skiing or just a drive and a meal, depending on the season. Someone has to stay sober to drive home.
- Competitive activities. Golf, go-karts, escape rooms or bowling. Anything with a winner keeps a group engaged.
- A game. A Flames game is an easy night out when the season is on.
- A good dinner. Book a private room or a big table well ahead, especially for a Friday or Saturday.
- Something the groom actually likes. The best plans start with what the guest of honour would choose for a normal weekend.
Golf before dinner, in a private bay
Indoor golf suits a bachelor party because a mixed group can play together. Keen golfers get a real round, and people who rarely play can still enjoy a closest to the pin contest. PGM Indoor Golf in SE Calgary has six private bays, each with its own simulator and touchscreen, and more than 200 virtual courses.
There is no alcohol on the premises. That shapes the plan: put golf first, before dinner, rather than after drinks somewhere else. A clear head also makes for a better round and a safer swing in a room full of people.
PGM does not provide clubs, so tell every guest to bring their own. The rate is per bay, per hour, shared by everyone in it, so the cost per person drops as the group grows. For bigger groups, book two side-by-side bays so nobody is waiting long for a turn. Our post on golf simulator etiquette is worth sending to first-timers before the day.
What eight people pay
Two bays for three hours is six hours of bay time. On a Saturday from 10 AM the rate is $35 an hour, so that is $210 for the group plus GST, or $26.25 each. Sunday to Thursday between 9 AM and 11 PM it is $30 an hour, so $180, or $22.50 each. That is less than the suggested 1 to 1.5 hours per player, which suits a group taking turns. Book longer if everyone wants a full round.
PGM is open 24 hours a day, so a late start works if the group can only meet after work. It also means a round the morning after is an option: the rate is $18 an hour before 9 AM Sunday to Thursday and before 10 AM on Friday and Saturday. The rates page has the full schedule, and the how it works page explains the door access link that lets your group in.
Calgary bachelorette ideas
The same planning rules apply: settle the numbers and the budget first, then pick the shape of the day. Calgary bachelorette ideas that work well include a spa afternoon, brunch, a class the group does together, a dinner with a private room, and a night of dancing.
A golf bay works for a bachelorette too, especially for a group that likes a bit of competition. Nobody needs to be good at golf to enjoy a closest to the pin contest, and the private bay keeps it to your group. Bring your own clubs, and keep the golf before any drinks.
Getting everyone there and home
Transport is the part most often left to the last minute. If the night includes drinks anywhere, plan rides before it starts. That could be a designated driver, taxis, rideshare or transit, but it should be decided before the first stop, not at the last one.
Parking at PGM is free and on site, which suits a daytime plan where people drive in and drive home. If the evening moves on to drinks elsewhere, sort out where the cars are going to end up before anyone orders.
A planning checklist
- Confirm the date with the guest of honour and the wedding party.
- Count heads and set a budget per person.
- Choose the shape: day, night or both.
- Book the activity with a fixed start time first, then dinner around it.
- Plan transport home before the day.
- Send one message with times, addresses, the budget and what to bring.
