Most birthday plans fall apart in the same two places. The venue suits the wrong age, or nobody asked what the booking actually includes until the day arrived. Both are avoidable in about ten minutes.
Here is a way through it, starting with the guest of honour and ending with a booking you do not have to think about again.
Sort by age before you sort by venue
- Under six: short, contained and close to home. Indoor play centres, a pool with a shallow end, a small room you control. Ninety minutes is plenty.
- Six to eleven: anything with equipment. Trampoline parks, bowling, climbing gyms, swimming, the science centre. Structure beats free time at this age.
- Teens: they want somewhere that does not feel like a kids' party. Escape rooms, arcades, karting, bowling with a scoreboard, golf simulator bays. Thethings to do with teens guidehas a longer list.
- Adults: an activity with a natural stopping point, then food somewhere else. The activity does the work of breaking the ice so the table does not have to.
- Milestone birthdays: a fortieth or a sixtieth usually mixes ages. Pick something a 15-year-old and a 65-year-old can both do badly and still enjoy.
The questions that decide whether a venue works
Ask these before you put a date in a group chat. The answers are more useful than any photo gallery.
- How long do you get the space, and does setting up and clearing out come out of that time.
- What do you bring and what is already there. Get it in writing, not over the phone.
- What happens if numbers change. Ask the deadline to change or cancel, and whether you pay per person or per room.
- Who is responsible for the space during the booking, and whether an adult has to stay with a group of minors.
- What is not allowed. Alcohol, candles, outside food and decorations all have rules, and they vary by venue.
- How you get in, and what happens if half the group turns up early.
Birthday party venues in Calgary for teens and adults
Indoor golf handles the two hardest groups reasonably well. Teens get a scoreboard and something that does not look like a kids' party. Adults get an activity with a built-in end time, after which everyone can move on somewhere for food.
PGM Indoor Golf in SE Calgary has six private bays, each with its own simulator and touchscreen, open 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Inside the bay there are more than 200 virtual courses, a virtual driving range and Swing Cam for watching your swing back, all included in the bay rate. Mixed ability is not a problem, because the range gives a first-timer something to do while better players work through a course.
Nobody works on site, so whoever books is the host for the day. The door access link arrives by email after the booking confirmation, and the simulator switches on at your start time and off at the end. The how it works page walks through it step by step.
Two bays for a bigger group, and the cost per head
The rate is per bay, per hour, shared by everyone in that bay. For a birthday that usually means booking two side-by-side bays so the group is not standing in a queue behind one mat. Two bays running at once also halves the time you need.
What ten people pay
Two bays for three hours is six hours of bay time. Sunday to Thursday between 9 AM and 11 PM the rate is $30 an hour, so that booking is $180 for the group plus GST, or $18 a head at ten people. From 10 AM Saturday the rate is $35 an hour, which puts the same two bays and three hours at $210, or $21 a head.
The suggested booking length is 1 to 1.5 hours per player, warm-up included. At a party people take turns and sit down between shots, so treat that number as a yardstick for how much hitting everyone gets rather than a rule. If you want a big group swinging most of the time, book longer or book a third bay. The rates page has the full schedule by day and time, and the cheapest hours are early mornings and late nights.
House rules worth reading before you invite people
- Minors must be with an adult. A teen party needs a grown-up there for the whole booking, so build that into the plan.
- No alcohol on the premises. Anything of that kind happens after, somewhere else.
- Bring your own clubs. PGM does not provide clubs, so say it in the invite. Guests without clubs can share with someone who has a set.
- No Sharpie on the golf balls. The ink transfers onto the screens.
- Leave the bay clean. Nobody is coming in behind you to tidy up.
- Cancel with at least 24 hours notice by emailing fspgmindoorgolf@gmail.com. Same-day bookings cannot be cancelled, which is worth knowing if your numbers are shaky.
If your plan needs something that is not on that list, ask through the contact page before you build the party around it.
Booking the date
Get the date confirmed with the people who have to be there, count heads, then decide how many bays and how long. When you have those three, pick your slots on the Calgary booking page and send the invite with one line about clubs. Questions can go to 403-680-3380 and a real person will answer.
