Most people arrive at this in early November, after the last decent round, wondering where to hit golf balls now the ground is hard. Calgary has three categories of answer, and they are not interchangeable. Pick the wrong one and you spend the winter doing the opposite of what your game needed.
Indoor driving range, heated stall or simulator bay
Heated outdoor stalls
A covered, heated stall on a real range. You are outside, the ball flies, and you watch the whole shot. A heated driving range in Calgary stretches the season at both ends, into November and back out in March, depending on the year.
Good for real ball flight, wind and carry distance. Less good in a deep cold snap, and they usually sit on the edge of the city, which turns a 45-minute session into a two-hour errand.
Indoor ranges
An indoor driving range in Calgary usually means a bay or a net inside a building, hitting into a target or short netted area. Warm, close to home, and usually the cheapest way to take a lot of swings in an hour.
Good for volume and repetition in any weather. The limit is that you often cannot see where the ball finishes, so you practise the swing rather than the shot.
Simulator bays
A hitting mat, a screen and a system that measures every shot. You hit real balls with your own clubs and a number comes back each time.
Good for feedback, for playing full courses, and for practising at a target. The limit is fewer balls per hour than a bucket, and you hit into a screen a few metres away rather than watching a ball land.
Volume or feedback, and why that is the whole decision
Here is the trade, stated plainly. A bucket of balls gives you volume. A simulator gives you feedback on every shot. Both are worth paying for, and they fix different problems.
Volume is how a change becomes automatic. If you altered your grip in September you need hundreds of repetitions, not a number after each one. Cheap balls and a warm building beat anything clever.
Feedback is how you find out what is actually happening. If your 7 iron feels the same every time but goes 125 yards on Tuesday and 150 on Thursday, more repetitions will not tell you why. A number after every swing will.
A sensible winter uses both: volume work first, feedback once the change has settled, a mix by March.
What a bay actually gives you
At PGM Indoor Golf, just south of Glenmore Trail in SE Calgary, there are six private bays, each with its own simulator and touchscreen, open 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Everything below is included in the bay rate.
- Distance and shot shape on every swing, which is how you end up with a yardage chart you trust.
- A virtual driving range, for repetition work with something to aim at rather than an empty field.
- Swing Cam, the difference between believing you came over the top and watching yourself do it. If that move ends in a slice, how to fix a sliceis the next read.
- More than 200 virtual courses, for the weeks when practice has gone stale.
- Your own clubs, since PGM does not provide them. Bring the set you play, so the numbers mean something in April.
One hour, split three ways
Fifteen minutes of wedges to a fixed number. Twenty-five minutes on a single swing thought with a mid iron, checking Swing Cam every few swings rather than every swing. Twenty minutes playing real holes, so you have to choose a club and commit. Suggested booking length is 1 to 1.5 hours per player, warm-up included.
Planning the whole winter
A range habit works best with a plan behind it. Winter golf practice in Calgary sets one out month by month, from a November baseline to sharpening in March. One session a week is enough to follow it, and two gets you to the first tee better than you left it.
What indoor golf practice costs
Rates are per bay, per hour, plus GST, shared by everyone in the bay. That matters for practice, because two people working on their swings pay the same as one.
It is $18 an hour before 9 AM Sunday to Thursday, before 10 AM Friday and Saturday, and from 11 PM Sunday to Thursday. It is $30 an hour from 9 AM to 11 PM Sunday to Thursday and 10 AM to 6 PM Friday, and $35 an hour Friday from 6 PM and Saturday from 10 AM, both until midnight. The rates page has the whole schedule.
If you practise weekly through the winter, the membership options change the arithmetic. Night Owl is $129 a month plus GST for unlimited bookings between 11 PM and 10 AM Sunday to Thursday, and between midnight and 10 AM on Friday and Saturday nights, which suits anyone who practises before work.
Where to start this week
An indoor driving range in Calgary earns its money when you use it deliberately. Book one hour, bring your clubs, and spend the first session building a yardage chart. Pick a time on the Calgary booking page, and send anything you are unsure about to the FAQ or 403-680-3380.
