Things to do in Calgary in February around two big weekends

February is a short month with two dates that do most of the work: Family Day on the third Monday, and February 14. Plan those two properly and the rest of the month looks after itself.

January is a month you get through. February is a month with a shape to it. Two fixed dates, a long weekend attached to one of them, and the first real sign that the light is coming back.

The practical list of things to do in Calgary in February splits neatly into three parts: the Family Day long weekend, February 14, and the quieter weeks on either side.

Family Day in Calgary is the third Monday in February

Family Day in Alberta falls on the third Monday of the month, which gives most people a three-day weekend. That matters for two reasons. Everything popular is busier than a normal Saturday, and a lot of venues run a holiday schedule that is not the same as their regular one.

So the first job is not choosing an activity. It is checking the schedule for the place you have in mind, on that venue's own site, and booking anything that takes a reservation well before the Friday.

  • Telus Spark: indoors from end to end, which is the safe choice with younger kids on a cold Monday.
  • Heritage Park: a historical village on the reservoir that runs a different program in winter than in summer.
  • The Calgary Zoo: workable in February if you plan the route around the indoor exhibit buildings.
  • Skating and tobogganing: city-maintained rinks and hills, completely dependent on whether a chinook has just softened the surface.
  • Pools, bowling and climbing gyms: the long weekend standbys. Check the holiday schedule for each one before you set out.
  • A simulator bay: a scoreboard for a mixed-age group, with an adult in the bay the whole time.

If you want a fuller version of the age-by-age list, our guide to family activities in Calgary sorts it by how old your kids are and by the weather.

Valentine's Day in Calgary, and the day of the week problem

February 14 lands on a different weekday every year, and that changes the plan more than the date itself does. On a weekend it becomes an all-day affair and tables tend to go weeks ahead. On a Tuesday it becomes an evening, and an evening is easier to get right.

Two rules make it simpler. Book the fixed part first, which is usually dinner, and pick an activity that leaves room to talk rather than one that fills the silence with noise. A gallery, a quiet walk if the weather allows, a class you both turn up to badly, or a private bay where you are not sharing a room with forty other people.

More options in that vein are in our date ideas in Calgary guide, including which ones work for a first date and which ones do not.

Things to do in Calgary in February between the two weekends

Take out the long weekend and the 14th and February is one of the emptiest months in the city. That is an advantage if you use it. Museums, pools and climbing gyms are quieter on a February weekday than at almost any other point in the year.

It is also when the daylight genuinely improves. By the end of the month there is usable light after work again, which brings pathway walks and outdoor rinks back onto weeknights for the first time since autumn. For the darkest stretch of the year, see things to do in Calgary in December.

One place that covers both weekends

PGM Indoor Golf is just south of Glenmore Trail in SE Calgary, with six private bays, each with its own simulator and touchscreen, open 24 hours a day, every day of the year. That includes the Family Day Monday, because the building does not run on a holiday schedule.

For Family Day it works as a parent and kids activity. Minors must be with an adult, so you are in the bay taking turns, and a first-timer can hit balls on the virtual driving range while somebody else plays a hole. There are more than 200 virtual courses and Swing Cam for watching a swing back, all included in the bay rate.

For February 14 it works for a different reason. The bay is private and you have it to yourselves for the block you booked. Two things to know before you plan around it: bring your own clubs, because PGM does not provide them, and there is no alcohol on the premises, so anything of that kind happens somewhere else afterwards.

The rate is per bay, per hour, shared by everyone in it, plus GST. It runs $18, $30 or $35 an hour depending on the day and time, with the cheapest hours early in the morning and late at night. The rates page has the full schedule and a planner for working out how long to book.

Booking the long weekend

Bookings come in 30 minute blocks with a 30 minute minimum, and the suggested length is 1 to 1.5 hours per player, warm-up included. You can extend on the day if nobody has booked the bay after you. Cancelling needs at least 24 hours notice by email to fspgmindoorgolf@gmail.com, and same-day bookings cannot be cancelled, which is worth knowing when a long weekend plan is still moving.

On a cold February night the useful detail is that nobody works on site: the door link in your booking email gets you in at any hour, and the simulator switches on at your start time. The how it works page covers the sequence, and a remote team answers the phone if something is unclear.

Book February in this order

  1. Put the third Monday and February 14 in the calendar at the start of the month, before anything else claims them.
  2. Book the thing that sells out first. On the long weekend that is usually the activity. On the 14th it is usually the table.
  3. Check holiday schedules on each venue's own site. The Monday is not a normal Monday anywhere.
  4. Keep one indoor backup for the long weekend in case the forecast turns on the Saturday.
  5. Use the quiet weeks for the things you never get to do when the city is busy.
